Hey, I'm Macayla! An avid indie-music consumer *cue Lord Huron + many more*, serial National Park adventurer and aspiring future dog owner. Big enthusiast of adventures, child-like wonder, slowing-down and romanticizing the things that bring joy in our lives. Most importantly, a big enthusiast of preserving your moments intentionally as ART. Honest imagery with feeling and depth.
There are some mornings you wake up waaaaay too early for, and they end up being the ones you never forget.
This Mt. Fremont elopement at a fire lookout in Mount Rainier National Park was exactly that kind of day. Technically, this was a styled content day I hosted but it felt like a real elopement in every way that matters. So sweet, slow, intentional, and filled with complete awe over where we were.
If there’s one thing I wish more couples knew, it’s this: sunrise in Mount Rainier National Park is absolutely worth it. Like… 100% worth it. We met Johnnie and Jared at the Sunrise Visitor Center parking lot around 4:30am (yes, very early and yes, slightly questionable life choices at the time). I was running on about two hours of sleep after another shoot going late the night before, but I’m not exaggerating when I say I felt wide awake the second we got there. There’s just something about that mountain air and the anticipation of what’s coming…..and also the rush of trying to catch a sunrise.
Johnnie and I have actually known each other for years—she was one of the first models I ever worked with back in 2022 when I was just getting started. So having her there for something like this felt extra full-circle in a really sweet way.
We started the hike with headlamps on, moving slowly up the trail toward Mt. Fremont Fire Lookout. If you’re not familiar, the hike is around 5-ish miles round trip, and while it’s not overly technical, the elevation can definitely be something to keep in mind, especially if you’re coming from sea level or not used to it! Taking your time and acclimating makes a big difference.
Along the way, we heard marmots (the cutest lil mountain critters), saw mountain goats in the distance, and just slowly watched the sky start to shift from deep blue into softer morning tones.
I also always bring some extra headlamps for sunrise hikes like this (not just for myself, but for couples too). It makes those early hours feel a lot less intimidating and a way more safe and relaxed!
When we reached the fire lookout, everything opened up in the best way. The sky was still holding onto that soft pre-sunrise blue, but the layers of the Cascades were already visible—ridge after ridge stretching out endlessly. You could see Mount Baker (more on that here if you’re wanting to see another elopement there) faintly in the distance, along with so many other peaks stacked across the horizon. We gave ourselves time to breathe, warm up a little, and get settled before starting anything. Just enjoying each other’s company and taking all of the beauty in.
Once everything felt right, Johnnie and Jared got into their vow spot with Mount Rainier sitting absolutely perfectly in the background. And it was absolute magic. They read their vows just as the sun started to rise, and right at the peak of their words, the light broke over the mountains in the softest pink glow. It was one of those moments that felt like sudden slo-mo…pure presence and zero rushing. No unnecessary words, just light, mountains, and two people fully present with each other.
Afterwards, we spent another 40–60 minutes exploring the ridgeline and the area around the fire lookout itself. The light just kept getting better and better, revealing valleys, textures, and layers in every direction. It’s the kind of place you can’t really “finish” photographing—you just eventually stop because you have to leave.
The hike down felt completely different in the best way. The trail was brighter, warmer, and suddenly full of other hikers starting their day. We stopped for snacks, laughed about how early we’d all woken up, and just kind of soaked in the fact that we did that. This is also part of what I love about sunrise sessions in Mount Rainier. They feel like an adventure from start to finish with the extra effort, a lil discomfort and the absolute payoff.
Mt Fremont Fire Lookout is easily one of my favorite sunrise locations in all of Washington. It’s accessible enough for a half-day experience, but still feels remote and expansive in a way that really gives elopements space to breathe. If you’re considering eloping in Mount Rainier National Park, I genuinely can’t recommend sunrise enough. The light is unreal, the crowds are minimal, and the entire experience feels like you get the mountain entirely to yourselves.
And if sunrise feels like a lot logistically? I also love pairing it with a day-before or day-after session so you can still experience spots like this without pressure on your actual elopement day. Either way—this shoot is proof that getting up early is almost always worth it.
If you’re in and ready to start planning your day, I’d love to be in it with ya. Head here to start a conversation!
